Abu Mena Heritage Site
Abu Mena Heritage Site is an archaeological complex in the Mariut desert, southwest of Alexandria, preserving the remains of one of the most important early Christian pilgrimage centres in Egypt. The settlement developed around the burial place traditionally associated with Saint Menas, an Egyptian Christian martyr, and expanded particularly between the fifth and seventh centuries AD. Its surviving foundations reveal basilicas, a baptistery, the saint's tomb complex, a pilgrims' courtyard, accommodation buildings, baths, workshops and traces of everyday urban life. The site illustrates how religious devotion shaped an entire late-antique settlement and how Egyptian architectural traditions interacted with those of the wider Mediterranean. Abu Mena was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. After groundwater damage led to its placement on the World Heritage in Danger List in 2001, conservation measures enabled its removal from that list in 2025. The archaeological ruins are distinct from the nearby functioning Monastery of Saint Mina.
